Can you work part-time on SSDI in Utah?

Many people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Utah wonder if they can work part-time without losing their benefits. The good news is that the Social Security Administration (SSA) does allow some work activity, but strict rules apply to make sure you don’t exceed income or work limits.

  • In 2025, the SGA limit is $1,550 per month (or $2,590 per month if blind).
  • If you earn more than this limit, SSA may consider you capable of substantial work and end your SSDI benefits.
  • If you earn below the limit, you may continue receiving benefits while working part-time.


The Trial Work Period (TWP)

SSDI also offers a Trial Work Period, which allows you to test your ability to work:


  • You can work for 9 months (not necessarily consecutive) within a rolling 60-month period.
  • During this time, you may earn any amount and still receive full SSDI benefits.
  • In 2025, any month you earn over $1,110 counts as a trial work month.


Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)

After completing your TWP, you enter the Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE), which lasts 36 months.


  • During the EPE, you’ll receive benefits for any month your earnings fall below the SGA limit.
  • If your earnings exceed SGA, you won’t receive benefits that month.


Part-Time Work Examples in Utah
  • Example 1: You work 15 hours a week at a part-time job making $900/month. This is below the SGA limit, so you can keep your SSDI benefits.
  • Example 2: You take on extra hours and earn $1,600/month. Since this is above the SGA limit, your benefits may stop after your TWP or during your EPE.


Impact of Work on Medical Reviews

Working part-time in Utah can also trigger a Continuing Disability Review (CDR). The SSA may review your medical condition to ensure you still meet disability requirements if you show the ability to work.
